At the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium, we recognize that many of our visitors have special needs, and we strive to accommodate them. Architectural barriers inherent in the historic construction of the estate – especially the cobblestone roadways, the lack of an elevator in the mansion, and other stairways on the grounds – make it a challenge for some individuals to navigate the property safely. The Museum is able to transport individuals with limited mobility in its golf cart, tram, or mini-van.
The public restrooms in the parking area and in the Planetarium are fully accessible in compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations. The renovated Planetarium theater includes companion seats next to each of the five wheelchair areas, as well as two transfer seats for wheelchair users. There are also three accessible parking spaces located in front of the Planetarium for individuals with limited mobility.
Visitors who are unable to use stairs or who have limited mobility can watch a video tour in the Lancaster Gallery of the Mansion. The video tour includes the Vanderbilt family’s private living quarters in the Mansion and the exhibits in the Marine Museum, Habitat, and Stoll Wing.
Upon arrival, please speak with our Security team or the Admissions department to let them know that you will require accommodations during your visit. They can provide more information about the accommodations available to you and assist you with coordinating these services.
As a historic structure listed on the National Register for Historic Places, we are prevented from making permanent structural changes to the estate. The exhibit halls and galleries that meet ADA guidelines are the two exhibits on the first floor of the Memorial Wing, the Mummy Room and Lancaster Gallery on the first floor of the Nursery Wing, the first floor of the Marine Museum, and the entirety of the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. A video tour of the Mansion is available upon request for anyone who cannot access the house.
Yes, service animals consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are welcome on the premises. For the health and safety of our visitors, pets and emotional support animals are not permitted on the property of the Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium.
Support staff accompanying individuals with disabilities to the Museum are entitled to complimentary General Admission, Planetarium shows, and guided Mansion tours. We ask that you are prepared to present a form of identification from your organization or agency that can verify your employment as a care worker to receive these benefits.
