Information on the Planetarium's Sky Observatory
Observing Sessions are open to the public using the Museum's new Meade LX200R 16" reflector telescope!
Observing will be on Friday nights from 9:00PM - 11:00PM. Observing is free with the purchase of the evening's planetarium or laser show ticket. There is a $3 charge for those without a show ticket. Observing is weather permitting only.
Private Telescope Viewing
Visitors have the opportunity to book a live astronomical experience using the Museum's 16" Meade LX200R telescope. Vanderbilt Planetarium staff will operate the instrument, explain its use, and interpret what is being seen in the evening sky. This service can be available for private events, dependent on weather and visibility. Due to staffing requirements, telescope viewing must be scheduled with the Planetarium Technical & Production Coordinator at least three weeks in advance of the event and all dates may not be available.
Private telescope viewing costs are $250 for the first hour and $125 for each additional hour with a 4 hour maximum. The observatory is limited to 6 people at a time - larger groups will have to take turns viewing.
Add an additional $4 for every person over a group of 50 people. The planetarium can accommodate up to 225 people.
Add a private planetarium show for an additional $300
To book private viewings and group reservations, please call (631) 854-5579
