The education programs at the Vanderbilt are multicultural, multiracial and multiage in nature. The museum serves school groups, civic organizations, local community groups and thousands of individual visitors every year. Our goal is to interpret the life and times of William K. Vanderbilt II, his travels and collections, and to enlighten visitors about the Gold Coast era of Long Island. The school programs align with New York State Education Standards in science, social studies, art and mathematics and thus educate and entertain students while remaining specific to the museum's mission and collections.
The Planetarium, built in 1971, provides an additional educational dimension that includes astronomy, meteorology and geology.
